Header tags are used within the HTML to create a heading element on a web page. They tell the browser what information a particular section of the page will contain. There are H1 to H6 tags. They are used to create a structure within the page which makes it easier for the users to read.

Search engines crawler’s use header tags to identify the topic on the page. If you include your primary keyword in the header tag then it tells the search engine crawler that the information is important.

These are a few optimization tips which can be followed while creating the header tags:

Structure-and-Context

1. Use header tags to create a structure and context for your article. Each header should give the user information about the text following it. Use headers to help you write the outline of your article.

H1 header tag is used to describe the topic of your page. H2 header tags are used to describe the main topics covered in the sections. H3 to H6 header tags are used to describe the different subheadings within each section.

User-Friendly

2. Google likes to award content that is user-friendly. Content that is easy to read is more user-friendly than the content that is not readable. When an article is scannable the user may actually read it and share it with friends. Social signals may not affect rankings directly but the more your article is shared the more likely you will be able to get natural backlinks.

3. Include primary keywords in your header tags as Google uses header tags to get the information about your article. You should try to fit keywords naturally and use variations to avoid repetition.

featured-snippets

4. You can rank in featured snippets if you optimize your header tags. For paragraphs featured snippets you can optimize your header tag to match a long tail voice search keyword and then answer the query directly. For list featured snippets you can use header tags to outline the different items in a list. From your subheadings Google can pull out and create its own list for a featured snippet.

5. Do not use multiple H1 header tags on your site. Use only a single H1 header tag on a page. Use Screaming Frog to see which of your pages do not have H1 header tags and which ones have multiple H1 header tags.
